Tutor compensation:
Tutors are paid $20.00 per session for working with their student. They are also paid $20.00 for attending monthly meetings.

What current tutors have to say about their tutoring:
“When I first started with my student as a third grader, she hated to read and did no reading outside of class – she only played video games. She is reading the popular vampire series of books that are many hundreds of pages. Her written work in third grade was unreadable. She now correctly spells very sophisticated multi-syllable words. Her quarterly grades were A’s and one B.”
“For two years I have been tutoring a ninth grade student in this program. At first, his writing and spelling abilities were extremely inconsistent and many years behind his actual grade level. This year in ninth grade English class, he had to write a fairly involved, lengthy story of his own design and experience. This work was ‘light years’ ahead of his initial writing level. With confidence in his eyes and a big grin on his face, the student told me that it was the best thing he had ever written.”
“My student came in and proceeded to dig in his backpack until he found something that he wanted to show me. He proudly held up a paper with a spelling test on it. He said that it was the first one hundred percent he had ever gotten on a spelling test. He was so proud. Then he said, ‘I think this (tutoring) is working!’
“The students not only see improvements in their reading and writing abilities, but what I notice even more is the increased confidence and self-esteem that comes with having success with the program. I think the fact that the teenagers I’ve worked with continue to come back each time is great testament to what the program accomplishes. We know teenagers…they don’t do anything unless it makes them feel good!”
“The Barton Reading and Spelling System is very systematic in how it helps my students approach reading and spelling. It builds in success and presents skills in a sequential manner and has allowed by student to slowly and steadily become better.”
“I’m so excited about the progress in reading my student is making with the Barton Reading and Spelling system. Using multisensory techniques, this program teaches the structure of our language in an orderly step-by-step fashion and incorporates lots of practice. After struggling for years, my student no longer needs to guess at words and is reading more fluently.”
“The Barton curriculum is very precise and clearly presented, with a logical progression of reading and spelling skills. My student has learned to apply these skills and now can enjoy reading on a gradually increasing level.”
“It is wonderful to see the growth in reading ability and self-confidence of my student.”
“As a tutor, I realize a great sense of being a part of an extremely worthwhile expenditure of time that builds self-confidence and enhances the ability of the student to reach for success.”
“Last year my student had no interest in books or reading and said she didn’t like to read. Now she’s found a series of books she likes to read and wanted to purchase books from the book fair.”
“This program has built my student’s self-confidence. I look forward to meeting with her twice a week. She seems to enjoy our reading of novels together!”
